NOT FOR CHILDREN UNDER 10!!!!

If you have a child reading over your shoulder, turn off the computer now, because this next post is going to involve some information that is not for the eyes of children. Caroline learned the truth yesterday. She came home from school and said, "Mom, Maddy had a talk with her mom yesterday and I want you to tell me the truth." I said, why don't we talk about this another time when your brother is not around. So when I was giving Lorelai a bath that night she came in to talk to me. She wanted to know the truth. "Maddy said her mom said that Santa isn't real." Well, Justin and I had talked about telling her this year after Christmas. I thought she might have an idea that she knew, but she assured me she really believed. I told her the story of St. Nicholas and how the spirit of Christmas is giving and that is why we perpetuate the myth for children and that is why it is important to keep up the story with Hilton and Lorelai for as long as she lives in the house. She understood and was cool with that. She said she was a little sad, but she was ready to know the truth. She said she wasn't mad that that we had not told her the truth because it was fun to believe in him. Then as she was getting into the bath she said, "Mom! You have got to smell this body wash" (She got it in her stocking) then she said "Oh yeah, you got it for me.." That is when I think she really realized it. I am sad that my little girl is growing up. So then, after her bath she came and talked to Justin and he told her that the Tooth Fairy and Easter Bunny weren't real either. She asked about Leprecauns... and we said nope. But then I said... unfortunately, President Bush is still real... She laughed.

Sophie asked me if Granny hired someone yet to play Santa on Christmas and I was like "what???" and she said not to be silly that the real Santa couldn't be everywhere all the time so he has "helpers" to play Santa so all the kids can have a chance to tell him what they want. I think the next step is realizing he is not real. It is sad but life goes on.

Hunter still believes. He turns 10 next week. I should probably tell him but he is so totally convinced he's real I don't think I could let him down. We'll just let him believe. But he can tell you all about sex. Sad but true. I think I'm ruining my children.

If my kids know that Santa isn't real, does that mean I can spend less at Christmas time?

It does sort of take the sparkle and glow out of Christmas doesn't it? I was sad each time one of you children discovered there was no Santa. It always annoyed me that some other kid would burst the bubble. It sounds like you and Justin handled it very well though. Good job!

Matthew was 11 when we finally told him and he would probably be embarressed if I told you how devestated he was. Why do we have to be told and why can't we just go on believing forever????
